Dr. Fred Valdez Jr. of the University of Texas at Austin is responsible for the development and management of a long-term archaeological research and Maya studies programme in north west Belize. The region under his jurisdiction is owned and managed by the Programme for Belize (PFB), a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and management of a rich and sensitive ecological zone which includes many important cultural sites. Working together, the University and the PFB have started an intensive survey and site inventory project with some 50 archaeological sites already identified. The Late Classic Centre of Dos Hombres (among others) is included this year, as well as smaller site localities throughout the territory. Participants will be assigned to one or more sites as the survey and excavation work is carried out. The opportunity to be involved in the early investigation of newly defined Maya centres makes this a particularly exciting project. The University has a well established field camp to accommodate all those involved in the archaeological research project.

ArchaeoExpeditions will be assisting to increase awareness of the archaeological programme and can refer students and volunteers to the spring session. The season runs from February through April.   A range of opportunities exist and minimum participation is 1 week.
