ArchaeoTravel Tips - Be informed !

Wondering if you and your trowel will make to the archaeological site ? In these times of heightened security at airports and international border crossings added patience and compliance to new regulations will be required.

But will all the fun and adventure of travel be gone ? I do not think so ! What we need is access to up-to-date information that will allow us to make informed decisions about when and where to travel, what to take along and what to leave behind.

A good place to start your planning is your Travel Agency - they have the latest industry information at their disposal and can find answers to your questions. The Internet also has a wealth of information about travel destinations. Go to sites that are well know and respected in the industry then double check the information with other sources to be sure it is accurate.

Don't be shy to contact your foreign affairs / state department representatives and ask for advice. For information on world events, travel advisories, and links to embassies and consular offices around the world start with http://www.voyage.gc.ca/consular_home-e.htm

Some of the worst dangers of travelling are those pesky parasites and diseases - Contact your local health office for up to date information on health conditions and vaccination requirements for countries around the world. ArchaeoTravel Tips - What to Bring along

Mandatory !

An open mind, a kind heart and a smile for everyone that you meet

• Small day pack to put everything in
• Trowel(s) - one or two trowels of different sizes. In North America the 4 or 5 inch Marshalltown trowels are popular for archaeology.
• Small note book with pencils
• Metric tape measure
• Small paint brush, whisk or old soft tooth brush
• Work gloves
• Water Bottle

Of course it depends where you are in the hemisphere, but some core products are needed anywhere you go :

• Supportive and comfortable work or hiking boots
• Cotton clothing that likes to get dirty - long pants and shirts - 2-3 changes
• Wool socks
• Rain /wind jacket and pants
• Sweater or fleece jacket
• Wide brimmed hat
• Sunscreen
• Bug dope

AprèsArchaeo Clothes

• The style of your clothing off the dig site will depend on many factors such as where you are staying - dig house or hotel in town, or a remote camp site in the forest or mountains. If you will be meeting local people and want to be invited back next year, learn about their customs and dress accordingly.
• Swimsuits are needed for the local watering hole or the public bathhouse.

Archaeo/Travel necessities

• Personal health needs - always ensure you have adequate supply of prescription drugs, allergy remedies, and health aids for nausea, the Revenge etc. etc. If you have any health conditions that require medication, you should inform your programme director.
• Bath towel and facecloth
• Biodegradeable soaps, toothpaste, and other personal toiletries
• Facial Tissues or paper towels sections 
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• Camera with extra battery
• Maps and guide books
• Personal reading and writing materials
• Travel watch/alarm clock with extra battery
• Personal music and headphones

Pack a flashlight - even if you are staying in a hotel.
