Viewing Rock Art

Cree Woman Figure

Take a 5-day soul-inspiring encounter with ancient culture, heritage and archaeology. Discover Canada's most spectacular display of Canadian Shield rock art -- a breath-taking presentation on towering Precambrian cliffs in the remote northern Saskatchewan wilderness. With professional archaeologist Tim Jones, author of The Aboriginal Rock Paintings of the Churchill River, and a local Cree guide, explore the painting sites by canoe -- just as Indigenous artists did centuries ago. Take part in archaeological research and interpretation, listen to legends of the paintings origins and meanings, learn about ancient hunting and gathering cultures of the area and more.

Experience a physical and spiritual connection to the land and its intriguing heritage.

Visionary Messages on Granite Canvas

Over 100 pictographs are available for viewing at this northern 'open-air gallery', Nowhere else in Canada are they as vivid and well preserved as here. The setting is dramatic with gigantic outcrops and sheer rock walls -- natural inspiration for the visionary messages painted ages ago on this rough granite canvas.

Accessible only by floatplane or by a grueling 2-week canoe trip, the rock art site has remained relatively obscure since being officially recorded in 1964. Here's your chance to visit a truly special area and explore exciting new archaeological frontiers. Be one of very few who have had the privilege!

Base camp, located about 50 air miles from the Churchill River hamlet of Missinipe, 550 km north of Saskatoon, is near the primary pictograph sites. Rustic cabin accommodation is available in addition to tenting on site. After initial paddling and safety briefings, we take daily forays by canoe to explore the rock paintings and other features of archaeological interest in the area. Back at the camp, you can get involved in learning activities such as making Aboriginal period pottery, throwing an atlatl, firemaking with a bow drill, or trying your hand at flint knapping.

For readers, Tim Jones brings in a small library of pertinent archaeological literature, including his own book on the Churchill River paintings. In the evenings, enjoy listening to legends told by our Cree resource person, Bonnie Hamilton and share a traditional meal of local smoked trout and wild rice - Bonnie's special treat for you.
