BOOKING NOW FOR 2004

Tarsus is a city in south central Anatolia. It's settlement reaches back to Neolithic times with continuous occupation into the present day. The city came under Roman rule circa 92 B.C. and was made a provincial capital in 63 B.C. flourishing through the reign of Cicero and of Caesar. In 41 B.C. Cleopatra visited Tarsus and is said to have met Anthony there. A monumental gateway was dedicate to Cleopatra and is still seen today. Tarsus is also celebrated internationally as the birthplace of St. Paul (circa 5 A.D.) and there is a basilica dedicated to him in Tarsus.

Since 1993, the downtown core of the city of Tarsus has undergone a transformation. During the excavation for an underground autopark in the city's Republic Square, some historic artifacts were found. The municipal and museum authorities ascertained that these pieces had great historic importance, so the construction was stopped and a scientific archaeological excavation started under the leadership of Prof. Levent Zoroglu of Selçuk University at Konya. The excavation is under the control of the Ministry of Culture and participants will join the ongoing university field school with many Turkish university art history, archaeology, architecture and restoration professors and students.

In 1995, Berdan Textiles became the official sponsor of the archaeological dig and pledged to continue supporting excavation on the site. More information can be found at www.romanroad.org.

ArchaeoExpeditions will support 2 - 2 week sessions to integrate participants with the university field school and provide orientation and discussion about the site findings.
